Acceptance–a powerful word isn’t it? Dellie and I have recently become foster parents. While there is quite a bit involved, primarily it is the offering of a simple, yet powerful gift–acceptance. We have accepted two children into our home. For Dellie and I it’s been easy. For our three year old Henry it’s been harder. They wear his clothes, play with his toys and have already been calling Dellie and I by the cherished names “mom and dad.” While we do not encourage these children to call us by these intimate titles they are offering us one of the most precious gifts they can give, their acceptance. It reminds me of one of my favorite summaries of the gospel from author Brennan Manning. He says, “God loves us as we are not as we should be.” You see man made religion teaches us that if we are good THEN God will accept us. But the gospel tells us that God takes care of our sin problem through the cross of Christ and therefore, he can and does offer us the gift of acceptance. This is GOOD NEWS!
