Appreciating America

This morning at my Rotary club meeting I had a profound reminder of just one of the freedoms we enjoy here in America.  I was listening to Jim Whitaker, former North Star Borough Mayor, speak and he shared an experience he had when he was living in Saudia Arabia.  He was working on a pipeline there for several years.  He told us about a time when in a public place he was sitting with another man and that man began to say some negative things about Saudi Arabia’s king.  Jim said nothing negative.  Within hours both Jim and his companion were arrested and thrown in jail.  Jim, who said nothing negative, was kept in jail for two days.  His companion who did voice a negative opinion spent several weeks in jail.  Can you  imagine?  As Americans it’s hard to fathom what other people deal with.  I for one am grateful to live in a place where I am allowed to express my opinion, aren’t you?
