I was chatting with my 13 year old son Jack on the sideline of a soccer field tonight. We were laughing and remembering his soccer team of a couple seasons ago. The name of the team was “The Crushers” but Jack affectionately called his team “The Crushed.” They were great kids but let’s just say that it was good that the most important thing in recreational soccer is not winning. It was frustrating for all the kids to keep losing game after game. Similarily, the people of Israel experienced a literal crushing in their history. Because of their disobedience God sent or at least allowed the Babylonians to conquor their nation and take many of their people into exile. Imagine being ripped from your home, never seeing some family members again. And yet God spoke a promise into their pain. He said, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). How are you doing in life? Do you feel like you are part of “the crushed?” I think God’s promise is for you as well. Will you believe it? Let it sink deeply into your soul and bring you comfort and a powerful sense of expectation. Oh and just so you know “The Crushed” did finally win a game.
Under His Mercy,
