I recently read a sad story about seventy-year old Vincenzo Ricardo in the Hampton Bays. Police found his mummified body sitting in front of his television. The authorities believe he was dead about a year before anyone noticed (Rumors Of God, Dareen Whitehead & Jon Tyson, 105) . Sad, but indicative of our individualized culture. But this is not the vision of the Bible. John Wesley once said, “The Bible knows nothing of solitary religion” (Rumors Of God, 93). There is no such thing as a lone ranger Christian. When we become a follower of Jesus we become part of his body. This is why in churches we see small groups meeting for Bible study, friendship and service. In addition, this is why we see Christians visiting their church friends in the hospital and reaching out during times of crisis or grief. Life truly is better together. Give it a try.
