Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free. –Statue of Liberty
What an invitation! Today is the 4th of July, our nation’s birthday. In the midst of picnic lunches, fireworks and family gatherings it’s important to remember the incredible gift of our freedom. And how expensive the cost. My great grandfather on my father’s side came to this country from Bohemia. He was actually a stowaway on the ship. When caught two women (legitimate passengers) paid his fare so that he wasn’t turned away. Because of his desperation and their generosity he got to become a citizen of the United States. He got to experience years of freedom. This reminds me of the invitation of Jesus to all of us. When we finally tire of the tyranny of sin in our lives and we’re desperate enough to seek a new life, Jesus steps in. He paid the price so that we can be saved. A theologian once wrote that salvation is freedom from the eternal punishment of sins of the past, the power of sin in the present and the presence of sin in the future (heaven). Thanks to God’s generosity we can become citizens of another kingdom and experience the freedom of Christ!
