When I was in college at Taylor University I had a friend named Neil. Taylor University was in Upland, IN and your entertainment choices were pretty limited in that small town. Therefore, Neil was very excited when a Chinese traveling circus came nearby and he bought two tickets. He asked several young women out, each for one reason or another said “NO”. Finally, he asked one young woman and she said yes! Neil was so excited that before he thought about it he said “I’m so glad you said yes, you’re the 5th girl I’ve asked.” OOPPS! Graciously she still went with him and they had a good time. Afterwards she wrote him a thank you note but on the front she wrote STEVE crossed out, BILL crossed out, BOB crossed out, JOHN crossed out and then finally his name Neil. I thought she handled the situation beautifully. Even most people who aren’t Christians have heard John 3:16 which says “For God so loved THE WORLD that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Most of us don’t doubt that God loves “the world” or “all of humanity” but us, that’s another story. The gospel never grabs a person until they realize that God loves them as an individual. Just as Neil had a valuable ticket that he wanted to offer “to some young lady” isn’t as compelling as if he had one picked out, let me assure you that Jesus had you on his mind when he died on the cross. He was both human and God, he can pull that off. Yes, he died for the world but more amazing he died for YOU!
