I’ve been reading a book called God Without Religion , in it author Andrew Farley tells about an exercise that he does in one of his seminars. He asks the audience of Christians how many there are as righteous as he is. He says many raise their hands (some people even wave two). But then he raises the bar by asking how many think they are as righteous as Mother Teresa? At this point most hands go down. Then he asks how many are as righteous as the Apostle Paul. Now only a few hardy souls raise their hands. Then he asks the ultimate question, “How many are as righteous as Jesus Christ?” At this point no one or maybe one theology student raises his hand. And yet every Christian should raise his/her hand to this question. We not only are forgiven our sins but we receive the righteousness of Jesus Christ. When God the Father looks at us he sees not our flaws and failures but the sinless life, death and resurection of Jesus. We wear his righteousness. Don’t believe it? Check out 2 Corinthians 5:21 “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” We are the righteousness of God. Isn’t that good news!
